Oh, my God!

They are dangerous.

Man: My question for you is... Besides singing, do you have any other interesting projects in the future? What would you like to do?

Well,...I wanted to be an astronaut, but you have to start when you are younger.

It's true. I know that.

...practicing and all. I really want to diversify myself. I can't imagine myself retiring from music. I don't really believe in retiring, and I respect my colleagues who do it... I don't believe very much in "goodbye tours" because they always come back. You say, "Bye!" but here you come again. I don't criticize it because music and the audience are difficult to abandon forever. Understand? The only thing I would like is to have more free time to paint. I would like to do some paintings and have an exhibition in New York.

Do you paint now?

I don't have much time, but I love to draw and paint. I even do comics. Visit my website, www.gloriatrevipaginaoficial.com Also, ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to direct movies...

In fact, you direct all of your videos, right?

I have had the chance to be the director of my two latest videos. I was the co-director of "Todos me miran",... director of "Sufran con lo que yo gozo",... director of "Psicofonía". I am learning. I am learning a lot and, for example, I would love to make movies one day, as a director.

We have to take a break, but when we come back, we want to know more about that. There is a song called "El Recuento de los Daños". Maybe we can listen to it in the next segment. Ok. Stay tuned. We'll be back with more about Gloria Trevi.

[clapping]

Of course, girl! I am only human. I had moments of uncertainty. I... was afraid that I wouldn't be able to have another child.... a thousand things....

[clapping]

[clapping]

A great song! Gloria, this is a song you wrote in 1994. First of all, I am amazed at how mature that song is for someone who was your age at the time you wrote it. Do you have a time when you sit down and write, or do you just sit down when you feel like doing it?

When I feel like doing it?

[laughing]

Well,... No, no, no. I am not sure I want to know that much information.

When I feel love,... when I feel inspired,... of course. You are having me on. Well... Sometimes I can compose with just some inspiration. Sometimes, like in "Psicofonía", the song wakes me up. Sometimes, I am on a plane, and the music,... the lyrics,... the song comes to my mind. I can also write something on demand. That song was written on demand.

It was?

Yes. But obviously... I was only told, "It would be good to write a song called 'El Recuento de los Daños'". It clicks in my mind... when it comes to love. And it's very special, you know? When I was 15, I started to compose a song that is included on this album called La Rosa Blu.

Which one?

I had never recorded it on any other album because I was going through a painful stage concerning love. However, I believe in loving again. I have become cheesy again. So it's almost as if I had finished it in the studio. It's a very pretty song. I didn't rehearse it with the guitar player, but I'm going to sing a small part. It's nice. You can sing it to your children or to someone who makes you see love in a new light. Think about what it says... I know,... It says...

It's a very cool song.

[clapping]

So, somehow the songs that shed some light belong to today,... and the dark songs relate to another time.

Well... I think there is always both light and dark in life, and there are songs... I can use darkness to create something beautiful.

You channel emotions into your music, right? You were in jail in Brazil for four years before the charges were finally dropped. What role did music play during that time? I imagine that it was a very difficult situation.

I was cleared of charges, thank God. My acquittal was won on the first appeal,... whatever. I showed, with the facts, who I am. Of course, music was important at that time, but God was even more important. In the presentation at the beginning of the show, you mentioned that my great grandparents were important in my education. They didn't have anything to do with those slightly rebellious things I did. I learned all of that in the DF, in the capirucha, in Mexico City. Gloria de los Ángeles was born in Monterrey, Nuevo León. Gloria Trevi was born in the capirucha. My mother and my grandmother have spoken to me a lot about God since I was a young girl. I thank them a lot for that because in a difficult situation, it is nice to be able to hold God's hand.

What songs did you write there, that maybe we know?

For example, I wrote "En Medio de la Tempestad".

Sure.

I dedicated it especially to my mother. She was one of the strongest inspirations for that song. I used to think about the people who used to tell me, "I love you. I will never let you down. Trust me. You are my friend". That was when I was successful. Then suddenly,...

"I don't know you anymore".

I mean,... it was shocking. But on the other hand, I had other people helping me out. Among those people was sister Rosita, a lovely nun who was there, and father Ubaldo, Caritas. You can hear in that song,... for example when it says... Ah, ah, ah, ah.*

Everything starts to fall apart. Understand?

Gloria, did you ever think, "Oh my God! I won't be able to restart my career?" Or you were firmly convinced that the outcome would be like this?

No! No, of course not. I am here. Chichis, the "chichi chongo chongongon chonchona". I mean, of course, girl! I am only human. I had moments of uncertainty. I... I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to have another child... a thousand things,... a thousand things went through my head. I felt I was a burden. It was very hard, very difficult, but all of that has been channeled into a beautiful foundation...

I wanted to ask about that.

...It is called the Ana Dalai Foundation. Hopefully, the public will contribute to this foundation.

Tell us what your foundation works for.

This foundation focuses on the children of women who are in jail. They are not orphans, and they can't be adopted. Sometimes they have to live with a relative.

They are children who have been forgotten because people don't usually talk about them. I'm not sure that people even think about them.

There are many children, in Mexico for example, who live with their mothers. There are many girls who are pregnant. In fact,... In the women's jails there is a lot of injustice. Almost 70% of women there are innocent, and they are in jail waiting for a trial.

I am sorry to interrupt, but I think it is important for those who are watching the show to know that here in the United States you are innocent until proven guilty. But in many of our countries, you are jailed until you get a trial.

You are guilty until you prove that you are innocent.

I mention this because many people who watch the show don't know that the legal systems are different.

That is very difficult. I hope... I know many things have changed due to what happened to me. Some of the laws changed in Brazil.

What does your foundation do exactly? Does it help children? What does it give them?

You can think of it as collecting resources to buy toys, diapers, milk and medication. We want them to get a present for Christmas so they don't think they have been naughty and that's why Santa Claus didn't bring them a present.

Is there a website you can give us?

Just go to my page. You can connect from there to the foundation's website.

Perfect. Don't move. We'll be back with more of Gloria Trevi's stories and music.

[clapping]

We continue to talk with Gloria Trevi. I am going to put you up against the wall now... against the wall.

Against the wall!

Yes. This is Billboard Top 20. I ask a question, and you answer with the first thing that comes into your head. No explanations, no further elaborations...

No censorship.

No censorship and la neta, neta, neta.

Go ahead.

Ok. Brad Pitt or George Clooney?

George Clooney's pet pig.

What poster did you have in your room when you were a teenager?

Parchís poster. Ha, ha, ha. I'm so embarrassed!

What do you keep in the drawer of your nightstand?

Undies.

I have to say this is the first time that I have heard that.

Really?

Yes. What is the strangest rumor you have heard about yourself?

That I am an alien. Ha, ha, ha.

The sexiest man from music?

Bob Dylan.

What is the biggest lie you have ever told in an interview?

I don't think I have told any.

Describe your perfect night.

Maybe my biggest lie was the one I just told you. Ok? My perfect night starts at 7 PM. After 7PM, playing with my children, having a good time, putting them in bed, making them sleep, and kissing them. Later, I sneak out with my boyfriend to party and rock 'n roll, and we come back at 5am.

Ok. Two records you would take to a desert island.

Una Rosa Blu, of course, and a very good collection from Serrat.

What song makes you cry?

"Inmaculada"... from the new album.

I love it.

It's awesome.

What do you spend your money on?

Things, toys. Ha, ha, ha. Toys for children.

We get it.

For my children, of course!

What would you give Gloria Estefan as a present?

I don't know. Maybe a painting made by me... Because she is so wealthy, I think it is difficult to get her something that she doesn't already own. Maybe a painting made by me... Hmmm... It is worthless.

Worthless. What would you give Juanes?

I don't know. First he should be my friend, and then I could give him something.

Do you sleep with or without pajamas?

It depends. It depends on who I sleep with, where, when and what time it is.

What is it that men will never understand about women?

They will never understand that we are superior to them.

[laughing]

Everyone... Yes!

Your worst fault?

Being so straightforward.

Your best virtue.

Being so straightforward.

Most treasured possession?

My mother.

What are you afraid of?

What I am afraid of? I fear the death of my loved ones before I die. I mean, I'd rather die first. That's selfish, isn't it? Well... And I am disgusted by cockroaches.

Something you always carry with you?

Love from my loved ones. Something material? There is nothing I am overly attached to.

Something you can't stand in a person.

Gossiping.

What do you do right before going on stage?

I cross myself.

Do you have a good-luck charm?

Several. I have a whole bunch of things, and I hold on to everything. I keep everything. I have stamps from different saints because I really believe in faith. A person's faith can move me.

Finally... Your favorite vice?

Only one?

One...

Corncobs.

Oh! Ok. You have passed the 20 question test.

I wanted to talk some more about your story and your music. Who has been your greatest influence?

Look, I think my greatest musical influence has been The Beatles. There is also Gabilondo Soler, "Cri, Cri". As a composer, Joan Manuel Serrat has also been influential. As a singer... I was already Gloria Trevi when I heard Janis Joplin for the first time, and I really identified with her. I felt something like, "There is nothing new under the sun". I felt some...

A connection, the way you both expressed yourself was similar.

I say this very respectfully because... Wow! What a beautiful voice, right? I also like Ellis Regina. I like interpretation very much, like when you suddenly say...

No, no, no sé...

Only say...

No, no, no sé.

No, it's... no, no, no sé. I mean, I love changing the tone. I mean, saying it once tenderly, and another time with pain, another time with anger. I find it very interesting performing like that.

You are a singer, but you obviously are a composer, a great composer. There are many cover versions of your songs. How do you perceive yourself first? If you had to describe yourself tomorrow, before someone who doesn't know you, how would you define yourself in artistic terms?

I think I am an excellent performer. More than a singer, I am a performer. Otherwise, I am not very modest. I don't think there are other composers like me, not recently.

When you write a song, Do you compose at the piano or in your head?

I compose at the piano.

You do?

It's much easier for me. I like composing... I usually compose a cappella. That was how I composed my first songs.

With your tape recorder.

Yes, with my tape recorder. Let's see... Let me see. I haven't played the piano in a long time. Let's see. Let's see...

I mean...

Good!

[clapping]

Listen, I'm being told that, unfortunately, we have run out of time. I wanted you to compose something, but... Can we say goodbye with some music? Something from La Rosa Blu, maybe?

Of course. This is a beautiful song. Listen to the lyrics. It was inspired at a time when my boyfriend and I were having an argument, and we were starting to grow apart. But I loved him... After all of love's disappointments, he was the one who had arrived in my life to... make me believe in love again. So, I put a curse on him. I asked solitude for a favor, and she gave it to me.

Soledad.

Bravo! I really want to recommend this album. It is beautiful. We appreciate, Gloria, that you and your music have been here with us. Thanks, Balta. I want to thank our audience for being here. I'll see you next time on Estudio Billboard.
